According to him, young women should be given the opportunity to discover themselves, complete their education, acquire skills and build independent lives before settling down.
He said early marriage often places young girls in a position where raising children and supporting their husbands can overshadow their own aspirations and talents.
Tochi noted that a woman who could have become a doctor, successful entrepreneur or leader may instead become known primarily through her identity as a wife and mother, with her individual achievements receiving less attention.
“Early marriage can make a woman’s dreams take a back seat; I’m against it,” he said.
He, however, stressed that he was not against marriage itself, noting that the timing was important.
“Marriage is a good thing, but timing matters. Girls need time to finish school, learn a skill, and stand on their own two feet first,” he said.
Tochi added that allowing young women to grow, develop their abilities and establish themselves before marriage would ultimately benefit families and communities.
